Hanying Shi and Sophy Chang, New York Video

Breakfast Party

(This live performance took place at 9 AM in China and 10 AM in Korea every weekday of September 2020)

“Breakfast Party” is a month-long Instagram live performance art project by Hanying Shi and Sophy Chang, two New York City- based artists who graduated from the School of Visual Arts together. Even though the pandemic has brought these two artists apart from each other, they can still communicate through the internet. Not only does this Instagram-based project reflect the current situation, but it also reveals how two artists live in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic through the performance of the most basic of daily activities: cooking and eating. This project shows the sense of disconnection during the pandemic, but at the same time provides the audience with the warmth of the artists’ shared bond through the internet.

The same 44 pictures are repeated in each shape in the same position. About 3 of the pictures in each rectangle have different people, who are light-skinned with dark hair and of Asian descent, showing themselves with their face up close to the camera. The other videos show their hands cooking various dishes of food, showing seasonings, meats, vegetables, eggs, onions and more. Most of the actions include stirring, chopping, frying, seasoning, plating, serving, whisking and other preparation techniques.</p>
